The Story Behind "The Dad Cast!"

Podcast Artwork

Let's take this from the top and talk about the story behind the chaos that is The Dad Cast! Let me tell you, out of all the podcasts I've created, this one takes the cake for pure, unadulterated fun. It's pretty damn ironic, though, considering we've only unleashed seven episodes so far. And hey, full disclosure, a couple of 'em didn't quite make the cut for the delicate ears of podcast lovers worldwide. Blame it on those pesky technical difficulties!

But let's rewind to a time when I was stumbling around in the halls of Plymouth State University in good ol' Plymouth New Hampshire. Where not only would I meet some of my best/lifelong friends but would also meet my now cohost Mike, at the only station that matters 91.7 WPCR Plymouth! We each had our own shows, but in typical college radio fashion, we crashed each other's show almost weekly along with a few other friends who you have probably heard on the podcast already! Now,for whatever reason our group of friends randomly started calling each other "dad." Which is ironic because none of us were actual dads…at least to our knowledge.

Fast forward a few years and a couple of failed podcasting attempts later.Mike and I were hanging out on Discord, cracking jokes and beers while playing The Forest. As we got into our typical banter back and forth, it dawned on us—why the hell aren't we starting our own podcast? We'd been talking about it forever, so we finally said, "Screw it, let's do this now!" Our original plan was to have a comedy podcast, with a bit of research thrown in for good measure. However, we quickly realized that adding a spinning wheel full of vastly different topics and putting 30 seconds on the clock to “learn” about whatever topic the wheel landed on. Also made The Dad Cast! fall into the improv Podcast lane. As the show would quickly change tones and topics quicker than Tom Brady would retire and then come out retirement.

So, here we are, armed with The Dad Cast!, a ridiculous comedy podcast turned improv podcast. Made for those who enjoy a good beer and have a dry sense of humor. So buckle up, 'cause you're in for a wild ride just like the two guys running the show! Find us on your favorite Podcast platforms with new episodes on the way for weekly releases!

Resurrecting The Brand

So when I first started the “Nicks Not Creative” podcast I originally just thought of it as a way for me talk to my friends about the cool and exciting things they did for a living. Which it definitely was but at the time I didn’t see the bigger picture. That the show its self was an extension of what I did from 9-5 ever day or whenever I was able to pick up freelance contracts. It was just another form of content creation. The premise of the show was me talking to another creative to learn about their creative process, and to get just a slightly deeper look into how other people approach creativity.

Sadly as life got in the way with a move, starting a new job and picking up a lot more responsibilities the show took a bit of a back seat. That being said I didn’t stop creating, whether it was your everyday social media content or video edits for a freelance client. I continued to create new things for people to see. Until one day one of my friends asked me what my podcast was called to which I replied “Oh, its called Nick’s Not Creative”. The friend just stared at me and without batting an eye replied “You just finished designing and writing an original board game… and don’t you write escape room concepts for a living? What the hell do you mean you’re not creative?” Now clearly no one ever really thinks of themselves as a “Creative” even if the words “Content Creator” are written into your job description. It’s this weird self-deprecating mental block we have whether we think its there or not. Long story short that conversation kind of got the fire underneath me to bring back the show for two reasons

  1. I miss talking to my far more creative friends.

  2. I honestly love podcasting ( at one point I had three) and interviewing people

So all that being said Nicks Not creative will be returning fairly soon so keep an eye out because it’s going to be awesome!
